Summer wrap up, fall preview

Thanks to everyone who helped make our first summer a memorable one! From the soccer clinics to the multi-sport camps, we had a blast working with everyone, and we’re glad that the summer went so well. The soccer clinics at Pope John Paul 2 High School had great turnouts, and from the wee-mites to the big kids, everyone had high energy, learned new skills, improved on old ones, and left with smiles on their faces.

Now that summer’s over, we’re moving into the fall season and we have a whole bunch of new programs that we’re excited to unveil. For starters, we’re all working with soccer teams this fall, and are happy to be on the fields with the kids. Jambo, Doc, Fliggy, AC, and all our helpers teamed up with the Cape Cod ReUnited soccer club, and our season is now 3 weeks in. Doc and Fliggy have been hard at work with the Barnstable High School girls varsity soccer team. And we’ve been working every week with BYSA, coaching a soccer clinic each Tuesday night that’s all high-energy fun–typical UKSD!

We also begin working with some of the local schools again, including the Horace Mann Charter and ME Small, starting this week.

Our rec programs, including boxing and the yoUng Kickers Soccer Discovery (UKSD), are underway. Sign up and try us out–the kids in the groups so far seem to be loving every second!

We’re also now offering a Senior Fit option, where seniors can come in and work with our expert trainers and resident high-energy fellas to get in shape, keep fit, and keep moving–no achy joints here. Stay active and stay young, both in body and mind!

Check out our website to learn more or to sign up, or just to watch some of the fun videos that Doc and Jam post. Motivating and entertaining, all in one.

New head coach at Barnstable

Lee Docherty was named the new head coach at Barnstable High School for the soccer team. Congrats Lee :) Bring some luck to my old high school colors!!! I know he’s excited to be working there; I hope everyone else is too.

Also up on deck with coaching: we’re all very excited to continue working with CCRU. Tryouts are coming up quick for my u-12 girls team, and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone there. Good luck to everyone trying out for spots for this fall.

Doc fighting to give back to kids

On June 12th, Lee Docherty will be fighting for more than just the State Police boxing team in Sturbridge, MA. He’ll be raising money to help buy equipment for the Cape Cod ReUnited soccer club and the Cape Cod Riptides softball group. The two programs, whom UKSD works closely with training and coaching young players, are non-profit organizations that aim to promote strong communities through their young athletes.

In a like-minded way, UKSD, Cape Cod ReUnited, and Cape Cod Riptides are dedicated towards providing quality athletic training to everyone–regardless of economic status. The grassroots clubs are Cape-wide rather than town-based, offering a competitive experience to and instilling healthy values in Cape youth at large.

Because of the non-profit backgrounds, the clubs look to fund raising and donations to dress their players in uniforms, buy soccer balls or softballs, etc. In line with UKSD’s community-based philosophies, Doc is putting all the sponsor money back in to the programs. Stop by (Gym Express in Centerville!) and sign up to sponsor him in his pursuit of helping the kids’ programs!

Summer Programs 2010

UKSD is running a bunch of summer programs that we’re really excited about, beginning in the first week of July in Barnstable, Brewster, and Eastham.

For the younger kids, we’ve got multi-sport clinics, soccer clinics, and our favorite–boxing and martial arts clinics (non-contact, so don’t worry, no broken noses). Our boxing clinics in Barnstable Rec have gone very well so far, and everyone that’s done one has loved it so far. All of the clinics are designed to be fun as well as instructive. Learn the basics or get a little more in depth, and have a blast while you’re at it.

For teens, we’ve got special strength and conditioning programs–if you’re looking to play varsity sports in high school or play at the college level, this is ideal for you. Learn about injury prevention while you get in competitive shape for your season–and gain the edge you’re looking for.

And don’t forget about the adults; we run bootcamps across the Cape for anyone interested. Get a jump start on a fitness program for the summer, or take your workouts to the next level. Or stop in to one of the Gym Express (located in Centerville and Falmouth) and ask us about our personal training.

Why UKSD was started

(This comes from a speech Lee gave explaining the reason he and Jam started the company):

UKSD is a company that has been formed due to the increasing cost of and philosophies surrounding youth sports.

I (Lee) have coached and trained sports fitness and worked with kids throughout the UK and the US for almost a decade.

As I was growing up, some of my best memories were the times that we picked up a ball, headed to the field and just had fun. When playing for a team, I was always taught that what mattered was taking part, and to enjoy myself; as I got older, things became more serious, and it was only my own passion for a sport that took me to the higher levels. This passion was created by not specializing in just one sport; I got to enjoy everything all sports had to offer, and enjoyed myself while developing physically and mentally though a group of different activities.

I strongly believe that it is this philosophy that, at 28, I still love not only the specific sports I still participate in, but all sports, and I’m as eager now as when I was an 8 year old kid who couldn’t wait for gym class.

It’s a strong possibility that if we specialize and overwork at one single sport from such an early age that not only are injuries more likely to happen, but complete burnout and lack of physical and technical progress will occur by 16/17 years old. As we know here in the US, that’s an important age developmentally.

We strongly believe that the pressures (to possibly become a professional some day–pressures often placed on our youngest athletes) and “win-win-win” mentality that is instilled in most clubs and team programs is not what is best for our athletes to develop fully. If a player, at such an early age, believes it’s all about winning and that they fail if they don’t win every time, what are we teaching the next generation?

We believe that sport-specific training is necessary as child athletes reach the age of 14/15. This comes at a crucial time in the development of athletes, and if they have a love for the sport, they will find the will inside themselves to push harder, to the next level. If they’re already burnt out from specialization, they won’t have the same internal drive it takes to continue forward, or may choose to discontinue sports altogether, without remembering the fun they had in the sport.

We have programs geared both towards younger athletes, designed to build a love of the sport, and older athletes looking to become more competitive in their chosen sports. For younger athletes, the emphasis is on multi-sports and enjoying themselves, and perhaps finding new interests or a niche in the programs. For the serious athletes, we run SAQ (speed, agility, quickness) and strength & conditioning clinics oriented around injury prevention–things adaptable to any sport.

We work closely with local teams, clubs, towns, rec departments and schools in order to help achieve our goals of building young athletes who love sports, and helping them develop mentally and physically–at the right pace, at the right level, in the right programs.

Moreover, we want all of our programs available to everyone, regardless of financial situations in this economy, or age, or gender, or race. We are here to help build communities, bringing people together through sports, and keeping them healthy.

Hello world!

An appropriate (although generic) blog post title! This is officially the first post of UKSD, a BRAND new company. We’re celebrating our five month anniversary today, from the very inception of the idea of the company through a very speedy growth process. With new programs constantly being added to our list of things offered and new partnerships with local companies that offer sport specific training, we’ve been busy!

We offer almost every sport imaginable, but so far some of OUR favorites have been the boxing, martial arts, and soccer programs that we’ve set up. We do multi-sports programs for kids as after school programs, and we’re getting our programs set up for the summer right now. We also just took over all of the personal training programs in the Gym Express in Centerville and in Falmouth through our partnership with them–something that we’re very excited about.

You can check out our website or find us on facebook under Cape Cod Sports Development to see our programs, mission, and to register for anything. Or stop by one of the Gym Expresses. We’re happy to get you set up with our unique kwikfit bootcamps or training sessions.
